Ferguson hopes to persuade Scholes to stay
Sir Alex Ferguson is facing a battle to persuade Paul Scholes to extend his Manchester United career beyond the end of this season. Scholes, who came out of retirement earlier this year after spending six months coaching United’s reserve team, has yet to be offered a contract to keep him at Old Trafford for another 12 months. The 37 year-old has scored four goals in 20 appearances since returning to Ferguson’s squad and came third behind Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in voting for the Footballer of the Year. But while Scholes has proven to be a key figure since returning to action as a substitute in the FA Cup third-round victory at Manchester City in January, it is understood that he has doubts over the merits of continuing his playing career next season. Ferguson has admitted his determination to persuade Scholes to continue and the manager will sit down with the player next week in an effort to secure him for a further year.
The Sun says United hope Rio Ferdinand’s brother Anton can do the Reds a favour when the QPR defender faces Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, after Ashley Young joked about the possibility after the 2-0 win over Swansea City. “Maybe Rio can speak to his brother about it,” Young smiled. “We’ll have to wait and see.”
